SAFETY TIPS

Radio Controlled Helicopters are not toys. The main rotor blades sometimes turn at speeds exceeding 2000 rpm. The tail rotor's turn 7-8 times faster. A machine in forward flight that weighs 10 pounds going 70 mph can kill somebody.

Think about the BMFA Safety Notice.

For helicopters specifically, the BMFA Aerobatic Helicopter Association's Safety Notice must be heeded at all times!

A cautionary tale...

There is a safety officer whose name is "Blade" Johnson. Any clue how he got that name? You guessed. He is slightly uglier now, and some emergency room is richer for his business. We are fortunate to have "Blade" around still, and he has shared with us a few tips.

  1. Know where the nearest emergency care facility is.
  2. Carry a celluar phone, or know where the nearest pay phone is
  3. Try to always fly with a friend.
  4. Stop flying when spectators are on the field or come near the flight line.
  5. Don't fly over your ability in front of large crowds.
  6. No blades will spin in the pit area.
  7. The pit area is protected by a fence.
  8. Where eye and ear protection when using the run up stand
